ETH Zurich and University of Zurich join Forces yet again
In 2014 ETH Zurich and University of Zurich received a generous donation from Dr. h.c. mult. Hansjörg Wyss, the former president of Synthes. The purpose of this donation was to join the forces of the two institutions and accelerate the process of bringing new technology to the market in the fields of regenerative medicine and robotics.
Wyss Zurich (www.wysszurich.uzh.ch) was then established in 2015 as a joint research and development center of ETH Zurich and the University of Zurich. It currently hosts nine projects (see: http:// www.wysszurich.uzh.ch/projects/) with numerous and varied topics such as personalized skin grafting for treating skin defects (denovoSkin), regenerating the liver outside the human body (Liver4Life), developing new tools for the treatment of sepsis (hemotune) or enhancing the interaction skills of robots (ANYmotion).
Furthermore, the project teams receive support from two technological platforms hosted by the center. These platforms have dedicated technology and engineering teams and support the transfer to market of the project results by providing highly specialized, state of the art services, expertise and equipment. The technology transfer offices of ETH Zurich and the University of Zurich support Wyss Zurich in all issues related to intellectual property rights. Both home institutions handle foreground inventions and offer exclusive licensing contracts to companies based on Wyss Zurich projects. The center specifically fosters entrepreneurship. Excitingly, three spin-off companies related to the projects have already been founded with the goal to attract investors and bring the technologies to the market as soon as possible. These are Wingtra (https://wingtra.com/) developing specific drones for professional mapping and surveying, ANYbotics (http://www. anybotics.com/) working on future robot mobility and Cutiss (http://cutiss.swiss/) developing personalized skin grafts. More companies are to be founded soon.
